Awareness and First Involvement
- Starts at home Age 0-6
- Knowledge that music exists
- Babies dancing when song comes on radio

Musical Start
- Age 0-6
- First music class, Pre-school classes, mommy and me music classes, kindergarten exposure to singing
- Movement to music and rhythm
- Explore through play - pitch, timbre, dynamics, duration, tempo, form, color, texture
- Participate in basic speech, singing, movement, instruments, notation, theory
- Begin building a lifelong love of music, and the confidence to express this love through participation in musical experience
- Starts to develop a positive musical identity
FUN-damentals
- K-5 - exposure to music elements through purposeful play
- Continued exploration through play - pitch, timbre, dynamics, duration, tempo, form, color, texture, rhythm, melody, harmony
- Introduction to greater variety of instruments (Orff, Recorders, Ukulele, Drums, Boomwhackers)
- Vocal pedagogy - Kodaly, solfege hand signs for physical representation of singing, matching pitch, melody identification,
- Movement to music and rhythm
- Listening to variety of genres and styles - Examples could include: Peter and the Wolf, Carnival of the Animals, Pictures at an Exhibition, Benjamin Britten - Guide to the Orchestra, World Music, Aboriginal Music, Jazz Music, Choral Music, Rock Music, Pop Music etc.
- Exposure to Composers - with listening examples
- Children’s Choir
Ensemble Start
- Grades 5-7 (instruction should ideally start in year 1 of middle school)
- Can include but are not limited to (Concert Band, Concert Choir, Guitar Ensemble, Ukulele Ensemble, etc.)
- Develop a sense of craft on an instrument and/or voice
- Begin to train in vocal technique while understanding the physical properties that create that technique (resonance, mouth shape, breathing, diaphragm, vowel shape, etc. )
- Begin to train in instrumental technique while understanding the physical properties that create that technique (embouchure, timbre, intonation, tonguing, breathing, diaphragm, mouth and throat shape, hand/arm/foot/finger technique, etc)
- Develop personal awareness and responsibility within an ensemble
- Begin to develop ability to self assess and create strategies to reflect on their own learning and improve (Metacognition)
- Begin developing awareness of interdependence among musicians in an ensemble
- Develop understanding of practice versus play (learn to train)
- Begin to implement sustained rehearsal and practice over time. In a public school setting, this would be linear, in-timetable classes.
- Exposure of music continues through repertoire choice (variety of genres), historical content of instruments and pieces, intention of compositions, and emotional communication of repertoire.
Specialized Ensembles/Small Group Ensembles
- Grade 7-12
- Examples can include but are not limited to: Concert Band, Concert Choir, Jazz Band, Vocal Jazz, Jazz Combos, Chamber Ensembles, Orchestra, Music Composition, Music Recording & Technology, R&B Band, Marching Band, Pep Band, Guitar Ensemble, Drum line, Ukulele Ensemble, Hand Drumming
- More choice to follow individual student passions - the Dive Deep
- Continues to implement sustained rehearsal and practice over time. In a public school setting, this would be linear, in-timetable classes.

Post Secondary Music Education
- After Senior Secondary - Post Secondary Continued Music Education Route
